“Vesica”
Two circles are drawn, the center of the second one being placed
on the circumference of the first. The area where they overlap
is called a vesica, similar in shape
to a mandala. “The vesica symbolizes the interactions
and interdependence of opposing worlds and forces and unity becoming
duality”1.
I chose this title because this piece is a healing shield for
our nation and the global neighborhood – planet earth, of
which we are all (without choice) a part. It depicts our
planet with two halves, dark and light, symbolic of the inherent
duality necessary for any whole, balanced entity. Calligraphic
shapes (rhythm) spin around and through both sides of this world. They
emanate out of the black center, which is the place of becoming
and are tinged with iridescent blue on their edges, symbolic of
consciousness. They spin through both halves of the world,
dark and light, depicting the ever-repeating path we live daily,
monthly and annually throughout our lives. This is our inner
existence.
An outer circle of beads, pigment and white line symbolizes the
profane level of existence, a set of cords that holds or binds
our physical world together. In these times, this is under
tremendous pressure and threat of becoming undone militarily and
environmentally. Vesica is
a visual prayer for avoidance and balance.
